About Kiawe (& Us)
A versatile and useful plant native to South America, the Kiawe tree has been utilized as a food source, firewood, construction material, and even beer fermenter. Capable of living for 1,000 years and able to thrive along salty, rocky coastlines; this hearty tree has made Hawaii its home for more than 2 centuries- after a single sapling was planted in Honolulu by a Catholic missionary, Father Bachelot, in 1828.
While South American civilizations of yesteryear had mastered the milling of Kiawe's legumes into flour for consumption, it was only within the last couple decades that a local traditionalist from Waianae began to harvest and produce the first ever commercially available flour- derived from hand picked bean pods along the west coast of Oahu.
